The New Student Workers Union (NewSWU, pronounced “noo-swoo”) is a union of primarily undergraduate, non-academic student workers at The New School. Having worked around 8 on-campus jobs during my time in school, I am on the Organizing Committee of the union and strongly believe that many universities around the country would not be operational without the labor of undergraduate students.

The branding for NewSWU represents both the coming together of student workers from across the university to campaign for a common cause, as well as our advocacy at all 5 colleges at The New School. It draws from the bold, striking visuals of past labor movements with a contemporary spin that appeals to young workers and organizers.

NewSWU’s intentional use of design to build a relationship with our target audience of potential union members was so successful that we were invited to teach a workshop on social media and branding for unions at the UAW Region 9A Boston Summer School conference in 2023.
